Never Stand On Chairs When Setting Up Classrooms

At the start of every school year, we see serious injuries related to falls from small heights. When teachers are hard at work setting up their classrooms, they tend to stand on chairs or bookcases to post items on their walls. Please make sure to remind your staff members never to stand on chairs, furniture, or other unsteady items. Schools should provide stepstools or stepladders that meet Cal/OSHA requirements — and they should be sufficient in number and readily accessible to staff members. While it may take some extra time to locate a step ladder, safety should always be your top priority.

Cal/OSHA recommends the following for safe stepladder use:
  • Maintain a 3-point contact (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) when climbing/descending a ladder.
  • Stay near the middle of the ladder and face the ladder while climbing up or down.
  • Only put ladders on a stable and level floor surface that is not slippery.
